Newborns 0-3 months

When working with newborns we focus on maximizing sleep without using ANY behavioural approaches (NO sleep training). Instead we focus on SLEEP FOUNDATIONS & sleep shaping. These are all the factors that promote sleep: sleep environment, sleep attire, sleep science, feeding/breastfeeding, sleep tools, and the emotional well-being of mom/baby/family unit etc. At this age, we focus on realistic goals & expectations. Our approach is holistic and very respectful of where such a young infant is at in terms of neurological sleep organization, night feeds and needing assistance to fall asleep and stay asleep.

Babies & Toddlers 5-36 months

When working with this age range, we first focus on SLEEP FOUNDATIONS before starting any formal sleep work. Sleep foundations are all the factors that promote sleep. This means that we get all set up for success before starting any sleep training. We will choose from a variety of supportive methodologies to help your baby/toddler learn to fall asleep and fall back to sleep unassisted. We do NOT need to choose extinction/CIO. There are many routes to the same goal. Together we will create a sleep plan that is realistic and within your comfort level.

Children 3-6 years of age (out of crib)

When working with this age group, we look closely at emotional well-being of your child, positive parenting strategies, sleep environment, connection time with parents, family dynamics, nutrition, screen time, and outside factors (school, childcare, etc.) We will use a supportive behavioural approach in conjunction with making sure your child’s love and security tank is filled to the brim! Remember, how a child feels emotionally, greatly impacts how well they sleep. We will address night time fears, worries, anxieties and so much more.

Mini Sleep School offers sleep consulting packages for newborn to school age that are tailored to our clients' specific needs.

Maxine Sass

Maxine Sass is an Early Childhood Educator and Certified Infant & Child Sleep Consultant from The International Maternity & Parenting Institute. Maxine is a household name across the GTA and beyond, known for her many successes in helping parents teach their babies and toddlers the ‘abcs’ of sleep. For the past 18 years, Maxine specialized in day and night post-partum support for twins and triplets alongside conventional sleep consulting. Until the last two weeks of her pregnancy (with her now 5-year old), Maxine personally attended all post-partum nights with multiples, before expanding her business to include carefully selected doulas to attend the newborn night support while she runs the Mini Sleep School from home and focuses on sleep consultation. Maxine offers her clients a variety of sleep methodologies, based on the comfort levels of her clients, the baby's temperament, and individual family needs & goals. She intently believes that there is no one-size fits all approach to sleep work. The Mini Sleep School offers services across Canada and the US via Phone, FaceTime and Skype, but she calls Newmarket, Ontario (Canada) home.

Do I have to let my baby cry it out to improve sleep?

No. There are many supportive routes to the same goal. During a consultation, we will go over a variety of methodologies. You will be able to make an informed decision and one that is aligned with your comfort level and parenting style.

What does the booking process look like?

Upon receiving your inquiry and booking a time for your consultation, you will receive an invoice for the full consultation fee. You can pay via PayPal link or an email money transfer. At this point, you will receive a questionnaire that asks you to provide some background information on your child, your family and your situation. This questionnaire should be returned 24 hours before our phone consultation. You will also be asked to email us photos of the nursery or bedroom, crib or bed placement, windows, and room set up. We then have our phone or video sleep consultation, which will last approximately 1 hour to 1 hour and 20 minutes. During this conversation, we will create a sleep plan that will be emailed to you as an attachment. This sleep plan will contain all of the relevant information discussed in the session (and more) for you to refer to as you implement your sleep strategy. Your Mini Sleep School package includes a sleep tracking app that will allow us to closely follow your child’s sleep reports in real time during our 3 weeks together. In addition, we will have check in calls, app and email support, as well as a final follow up call at the end.

Do you use controlled crying methods?

Absolutely–they have their place in sleep training and anyone who claims otherwise is not being truthful. That being said, they are definitely not the only options available. All of the methods we use have their pros and cons, so we will take the time to talk you through your options; there are many routes to the same goal: sleeping minis and well-rested parents!

Do I have to night wean when sleep training my baby?

No. Sleep training & night weaning are 2 separate things. If you choose to continue to nurse in the night while working on sleep skills that is entirely up to you. My role is to help you make an informed decision. We certainly can create a ‘happy middle ground’ of achieving excellent sleep skills, while keeping 1-2 feeds in.

What is the earliest age I can sleep train my baby?

This depends who you are asking. While many sleep consultants will book clients with 4 month olds, I will not. At 4 months of age the sleep science is not very forgiving. At this age many still have a strong startle reflex, have neurologically disorganized day sleep, cannot easily link sleep cycles, need feeding in the night, and generally have very immature sleep patterns. For those reasons, 5 months is the earliest I will introduce a formal sleep strategy.

What type of sleep training techniques do you use?

We believe that each family is different and all babies and children have unique sleep problems and requirements. We pride ourselves on truly tailoring our sleep services to fit the comfort level of parents, goals, nuances, family dynamics, temperament, age etc. Each situation calls for a unique plan, methodology & approach. We are well versed on a variety of methodologies and help our clients make well informed decisions when choosing sleep training methods.
